Tummy Tuck Procedure
By Joseph Then

A tummy tuck is a plastic surgery procedure where the stomach area is flattened and tightened. This involves the removal of skin and fat to achieve the desired result. It is an elective plastic surgery procedure that is not covered by insurance in mot cases.

Tummy tuck surgery is done by a certified plastic surgeon. It is usually an out patient procedure, which means it does not require a stay in the hospital. Most often it can be done in the surgeons own facilities under general anesthesia.

Part of a successful tummy tuck involves the skills of the surgeon and the actions of the patient.

A surgeon should be experienced and well trained in the tummy tuck procedure. A tummy tuck involves both cutting away excess skin and liposuction to remove extra fat. In a full tummy tuck the belly button often has to be moved and redesigned. The actual belly button is often removed in the removal of excess skin.

A tummy tuck requires a patient to follow all doctors orders before and after the surgery to ensure good, lasting results. By not following orders a patient could compromise healing and cause further complications or scarring issues.

The tummy tuck procedure begins with opening up the stomach area and separating the skin from the bones and muscles it may be attached to. The skin is then tightened to the desired look and the excess is removed. If excess fat will be removed this is done before cutting away skin. Once the liposuction is complete the skin is laid back into place and tightened, the excess removed and the skin is sewn into its new position.

If a belly button is needed to be replaced this is done as one of the last steps of the procedure.

The incision of a tummy tuck is usually made near the pelvic area to help minimize visual scarring.

Recovery is usually one to three weeks. The first few days will be accompanied with bruising, swelling and pain in the stomach area. Scars can take up to six months to appear lighter and less visible.

A tummy tuck is a common procedure. There are risks, but most can be avoided through careful selection of a surgeon and following all the doctors orders you are given.

One of the most important aspects of a tummy tuck is to remember that it is a sculpting procedure not a weight loss procedure. A tummy tuck should only be an option when diet and exercise fail to produce results.
